Martin D-28, 1973
The 1973 Martin D-28 is a true vintage classic and embodies the legendary Martin Dreadnought sound that countless musicians have cherished for decades. Hardly any other model epitomizes the classic steel-string sound quite like a well-played Martin D-28 from this era. To this day, it remains one of the most sought-after vintage dreadnoughts and captivates with its unmistakable tonal character.
The combination of a solid spruce top and solid East Indian rosewood for the back and sides produces the typical big, open, and powerful Martin sound. The Martin D-28 impresses with rich bass, warm mids, and clear, wonderfully detailed highs. We’ve had numerous D-28s from the 1970s in our shop over the past few years, but this particular example really stands out in terms of tone. The guitar has an exceptionally open, well-broken-in, and resonant tone with impressive dynamics and precisely that dry, woody vintage character you’d expect from a great old Martin D-28.
Overall, the guitar is in good condition with age-appropriate signs of wear that give it a beautiful, authentic vintage character. The guitar has a very fine crack in the top that originates from one corner of the bridge. This has already been professionally repaired and has remained stable ever since. In addition, some of the internal bracing has been professionally re-glued by a luthier. The frets have already been replaced and are in nearly like-new condition.
It is equipped with a high-quality Schertler Bluestick pickup, which captures the guitar’s natural sound in a very authentic and dynamic way.
The top shows a slight warp, but technically, the guitar is in very good condition and is absolutely ready to play.
We carefully set up every guitar. We adjust the neck radius and string action to ensure that the guitar plays cleanly, comfortably, and without buzzing across the entire fretboard.
The string action is 2.5 mm on the low E string and 2.0 mm on the high e string, measured at the 12th fret.
Includes an original Martin case with signs of wear due to age.
