Product Description

The Guild D-55E ATB is one of the highest-quality American-made acoustic guitars and has been considered one of the flagship models of the long-established manufacturer Guild for decades. With its classic dreadnought body shape, select tonewoods, and beautiful Antique Burst finish, it combines traditional American guitar craftsmanship with particularly elegant features. The Guild featured here was made in 2023 and impresses across the board, both in terms of sound and appearance.

The history of the Guild D-55 dates back to the late 1960s. Since then, this model has been one of the manufacturer’s best-known and highest-quality dreadnoughts. It is characterized by its premium materials, elaborate embellishments, and powerful, balanced tone. The D-55 is often regarded as one of the most interesting alternatives to the great American dreadnought classics from Martin and Gibson.

The top is made of solid AAA Sitka spruce, while the back and sides are made of solid East Indian rosewood. This classic combination is one of the most popular wood combinations in high-end acoustic guitar making. The spruce top provides excellent dynamics and a direct response, while the rosewood lends the sound a special depth, warmth, and a rich array of overtones.

In terms of tone, the Guild D-55E ATB impresses with a powerful, open, and exceptionally balanced sound. The large dreadnought body shape produces a deep, full-bodied bass foundation, complemented by warm, prominent mids and clear, brilliant highs. Particularly impressive are its rich tone, long sustain, and outstanding dynamics. Despite its powerful bass response, the individual strings remain wonderfully defined.

When fingerpicking, the Guild impresses with beautiful string separation and a tone rich in overtones and finely defined. It also delivers excellent projection when flatpicking and clearly brings out individual melody lines. Finally, when strummed vigorously, the D-55 truly shows its full potential, delivering a big, powerful sound with plenty of volume and impressive resonance.

In terms of construction, the guitar also meets the high standards expected of a premium American dreadnought. The traditional scalloped X-bracing supports the free vibration of the solid spruce top and contributes significantly to the dynamic response. The mahogany neck with a walnut center strip offers a high-quality and stable construction. The fingerboard and bridge are made of ebony, while the 651 mm scale length and 43 mm nut width ensure a pleasantly familiar playing feel.

Visually, this Guild is a real standout. The intricate V-block fretboard inlays made of mother-of-pearl and abalone are among the D-55’s most distinctive features. Added to this are the elegant headstock with the traditional Guild inlay and the high-quality gold-plated tuners. The Antique Burst finish is particularly beautiful; its warm color gradients are beautifully accentuated by the high-gloss nitrocellulose finish. The overall design has a distinctly elegant look and is reminiscent of the great American acoustic guitars from the classic vintage era.

For amplified performance, the Guild D-55E ATB is equipped with the high-quality L.R. Baggs Anthem pickup system. This system combines a piezo pickup with a specially designed microphone located inside the guitar. This enables a particularly natural and dynamic reproduction of the acoustic sound. Volume, microphone blend, and phase can be conveniently adjusted using the controls discreetly mounted in the soundhole. This makes the Guild ideal for professional stage and live performances.

The Guild D-55E ATB from 2023 offered here is in very good condition. There are only a few minor, normal signs of play and wear, including some fine strumming marks. Otherwise, the instrument is in exceptionally well-maintained condition. The frets are also in very good condition. Overall, this is a beautiful, superbly preserved American premium dreadnought with excellent tone and equally impressive playability.

We carefully set up every guitar. We adjust the neck radius and string action to ensure that the guitar plays cleanly, comfortably, and without buzzing across the entire fretboard.

The string action is 2.5 mm on the low E-string and 1.7 mm on the high E-string, measured at the 12th fret.
