The 2022 Gibson SJ-200 Studio Rosewood combines Gibson’s legendary Super Jumbo body style with high-quality features, an all-solid construction, and an impressively powerful sound. The Natural Gloss model offered here features a beautiful, high-gloss lacquered Sitka spruce top, as well as a solid rosewood back and sides. With its imposing body shape, the characteristic “Moustache” bridge, and the classic Gibson look, this SJ-200 Studio is a particularly interesting variation on the famous American Super Jumbo.
The history of the Gibson SJ-200 dates back to 1937. At that time, Gibson introduced the Super Jumbo 200, an exceptionally large and elaborately crafted acoustic guitar that was originally designed for professional musicians. With its imposing body shape, powerful sound projection, and distinctive appearance, the SJ-200 quickly became one of the American manufacturer’s best-known models.
Over the decades, the SJ-200 has been played by numerous well-known musicians and has had a particularly strong influence on the sound and look of American country, folk, and rock music. Artists such as Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, and many other musicians helped make the large Gibson Super Jumbo a true icon of acoustic guitar making. To this day, the SJ-200 remains one of the most famous and time-honored acoustic guitars of all time.
With the SJ-200 Studio, Gibson revisits this legendary concept and combines it with a slightly more understated feature set. The focus is on the high-quality construction, the select tonewoods, and the characteristic sound qualities of the large Super Jumbo. The rosewood version is particularly interesting, as it combines the classic body shape with the popular combination of a spruce top and rosewood back and sides.
The top is made of solid Sitka spruce, one of the most trusted tonewoods in high-quality acoustic guitar making. Sitka spruce is characterized by its wide dynamic range, clear response, and excellent balance between warmth and brilliance. It responds equally well to a light touch and vigorous strumming, making it an excellent foundation for a versatile acoustic guitar.
Gibson uses solid rosewood for the back and sides. This time-honored tonewood is particularly known for its deep, full-bodied bass, clear treble, and rich spectrum of overtones. When combined with a solid spruce top, it produces an open and resonant tone that shines equally well with subtle playing styles and powerful accompaniment.
This combination of woods really comes into its own on a Super Jumbo. The large body offers tremendous resonance and supports the development of a powerful bass foundation. At the same time, the rosewood provides beautiful tonal depth and long sustain. The result is a guitar with impressive richness of tone and exceptionally broad dynamic range.
Sonically, this Gibson SJ-200 Studio Rosewood impresses with a powerful, open sound rich in overtones. The bass tones are full and present without dominating the overall sound. The mids possess a pleasant warmth, while the highs are reproduced with clarity, brilliance, and fine detail. The balance with which the individual frequency ranges blend together is particularly beautiful.
When strumming, the guitar produces an impressive volume of sound. Open chords sound big, full, and resonant, and the individual strings remain well-defined despite the enormous richness of the sound. This characteristic is particularly appealing for singer-songwriters, folk, country, and acoustic rock music. The large Gibson provides a powerful foundation and accompanies a vocal part beautifully.
The SJ-200 Studio also demonstrates its qualities when it comes to fingerpicking and more nuanced playing styles. Despite its size, it responds very directly and is sensitive to varying levels of picking intensity. Individual notes possess a beautiful warmth, clear definition, and a long sustain. As a result, the guitar is by no means limited to powerful rhythm accompaniment; it also provides an excellent foundation for melodic picking and fingerstyle playing.
An important component of the design is the traditional, hand-crafted scalloped X-bracing. In this construction method, the top ribs are carefully shaped to achieve a balanced combination of stability and vibration damping. This allows the solid spruce top to respond freely and fully express its dynamic qualities.
The neck also contributes to the comfortable playing experience. It is made of Utile, an African hardwood known for its stability and strength. The rosewood fingerboard feels pleasant to the touch and blends beautifully with the guitar’s classic appearance. With a scale length of 648 mm and a nut width of 43.8 mm, the guitar has familiar dimensions and is very comfortable to play despite its large body shape.
Visually, the Gibson SJ-200 Studio Rosewood is a beautiful guitar. The high-gloss Sitka spruce top in Natural Gloss provides an elegant contrast to the darker rosewood of the back and sides. A particularly distinctive feature is the traditional rosewood “moustache” bridge, which has been one of the unmistakable hallmarks of the Gibson Super Jumbo for many decades.
The large, curved body shape gives the guitar its imposing appearance and makes it instantly recognizable as a member of the famous SJ-200 family. At the same time, the Studio model exudes a pleasant elegance thanks to its somewhat more understated features. The natural tonewoods and classic shape take center stage without making the guitar appear overloaded.
For more intensive use, the SJ-200 Studio Rosewood is equipped with a high-quality L.R. Baggs Element Bronze pickup system. This system features a pickup positioned beneath the bridge inlay and was designed to transmit the vibrations of the acoustic guitar as naturally and dynamically as possible.
This makes the Gibson ideal for live performances, rehearsals, and other situations where reliable amplification is needed. The system allows for a direct connection to an acoustic amplifier or a suitable sound reinforcement system while preserving the instrument’s characteristic tone.
The Gibson SJ-200 Studio Rosewood is thus an exceptionally versatile acoustic guitar that combines the time-honored character of the Super Jumbo with modern, practical features. Particularly noteworthy is the combination of the large body, the all-solid spruce and rosewood construction, and the outstanding dynamic range. Anyone who appreciates the unmistakable sound and look of a Gibson SJ-200 will find here a high-quality and sonically impressive variation on this classic.
The Gibson SJ-200 Studio Rosewood offered here was made in 2022 and is in very good overall condition. There are some normal signs of play and wear, which are to be expected on a used instrument. There is a slightly deeper scratch on the side, which is shown in the photos. The frets are in very good to nearly like-new condition. Technically, the guitar is in perfect working order, and the L.R. Baggs pickup system functions flawlessly. Included with the guitar are the original Gibson case and an additional bridge insert for adjusting the string action.
We carefully set up every guitar. We adjust the neck radius and string action to ensure that the guitar plays cleanly, comfortably, and without buzzing across the entire fretboard.
The string action is currently 2.2 mm on the low E string and 1.5 mm on the high e string, measured at the 12th fret.
This sets the guitar to an extremely low action, making it a joy to play. If you prefer a higher string action, you can use the included second bridge insert. By simply swapping it out, you can increase the string action to 3.0 mm on the low E string and 2.3 mm on the high e string. This makes it easy to adjust the guitar to suit different personal preferences and playing styles.
