Product Description

The Gibson LG-2 50s Original combines the classic charm of American Gibson guitars from the 1950s with modern playability and high-quality features. With its compact small-body design, all-solid construction, and beautiful natural gloss finish, it is a particularly appealing acoustic guitar for lovers of traditional American instruments. The LG-2 offered here was built in 2020 and impresses with a warm, woody tone and exceptionally comfortable playability.

The history of the Gibson LG-2 dates back to 1942. Developed as a smaller alternative to the large Gibson Dreadnoughts, the model quickly became a popular guitar for folk, blues, and traditional American music. Instruments from the 1940s and 1950s, in particular, are highly sought after today for their distinctive tone and comfortable body shape. With the LG-2 50s Original, Gibson revives this classic design and combines it with modern, reliable features.

The top is made of solid Sitka spruce, while the back and sides are made of solid mahogany. This traditional wood combination is one of the most time-tested in American acoustic guitar making. The spruce top provides a direct response and beautiful dynamics, while the mahogany lends the sound its characteristic warmth, dry mids, and a pleasant natural quality.

Sonically, the Gibson LG-2 50s Original impresses with a wonderfully balanced, warm, and woody tone. Despite its compact body shape, it produces an astonishingly powerful bass foundation, complemented by prominent mids and clear, pleasantly rounded highs. Particularly impressive is its immediate response, which allows even a light touch to produce a full and well-defined tone.

The LG-2 really shines when it comes to fingerstyle and traditional blues. Individual notes have a beautiful warmth and are easily distinguishable from one another. The guitar responds sensitively to different picking intensities and offers excellent dynamics. Even with light to medium strumming, it impresses with an open and harmonious tone that’s a perfect fit for folk, country, and singer-songwriter music.

An important feature of the traditional construction is the scalloped X-bracing. The carefully shaped top ribs allow the solid Sitka spruce top to vibrate freely and fully express its tonal qualities. The combination of this construction method and the compact mahogany body produces the characteristic vintage sound that has made classic Gibson small-body guitars so popular.

The features are also modeled after historical prototypes. The mahogany neck offers a comfortable playing feel and is complemented by a rosewood fingerboard with classic mother-of-pearl dot inlays. With a scale length of 628.65 mm and a nut width of 43.8 mm, the LG-2 offers comfortable dimensions. The slightly shorter scale length ensures a pleasantly smooth playing feel and makes bending and more challenging fingering techniques easier.

Visually, the Gibson LG-2 50s Original is a beautiful, classically designed acoustic guitar. The natural wood color of the Sitka spruce top is particularly striking thanks to the high-gloss nitrocellulose finish. The traditional tortoise pickguard, the Grover tuners with cream-colored wings, and the simple features underscore the authentic character of the 1950s. It is precisely this understated elegance that accounts for a significant part of this model’s appeal.

For amplified performances, the Gibson comes factory-equipped with a high-quality L.R. Baggs VTC pickup system. This system delivers a natural and dynamic reproduction of the acoustic sound. The volume and tone controls, discreetly mounted in the soundhole, are easy to operate without compromising the guitar’s classic look. This makes the LG-2 ideal for live performances and amplified acoustic music.

The Gibson LG-2 50s Original from 2020 offered here is in good overall condition. There are some normal signs of play and wear, which are visible in various places upon closer inspection. Overall, however, the guitar is well-maintained and has a beautiful, authentic look. The frets are in very good condition. Technically, the guitar is flawless and impresses with its outstanding sound and comfortable playability. The guitar comes with the original Gibson hard case and the Case Candy.

We carefully set up every guitar. We adjust the neck radius and string action to ensure that the guitar plays cleanly, comfortably, and without buzzing across the entire fretboard.

The string action is 2.5 mm on the low E-string and 1.7 mm on the high E-string, measured at the 12th fret.
