Description

The Gibson Hummingbird Quilt Maple is a particularly elegant and rare variation of the legendary Gibson Hummingbird. While the classic model traditionally features mahogany for the back and sides, this special version boasts beautifully figured quilted maple. Combined with the rich Vintage Cherry Sunburst finish and the distinctive Hummingbird pickguard, the result is an exceptionally attractive guitar that clearly stands out from the classic Hummingbird.

The Gibson Hummingbird Quilt Maple offered here was built in 2014 and combines the traditional character of a square-shoulder dreadnought with the distinctive tonal qualities of maple. The combination of a solid Sitka spruce top and solid quilted maple for the back and sides produces an open, clear, and exceptionally dynamic sound.

Compared to a classic Hummingbird with a mahogany body, this model features a particularly direct response and outstanding definition of individual notes. The bass is powerful yet controlled, while the prominent mids and brilliant highs ensure a balanced and transparent tone. This guitar really shines during fingerpicking, with beautiful string separation and plenty of dynamics. At the same time, when strummed vigorously, it delivers the full, assertive sound you’d expect from a large Gibson.

A particular highlight is its extraordinary appearance. The heavily figured quilted maple is beautifully accentuated by the Vintage Cherry Sunburst finish, giving the guitar a unique look. Depending on the angle of the light, the wood displays impressive depth and a three-dimensional grain. Combined with the traditional Hummingbird pickguard, this creates a successful blend of classic Gibson design and exceptionally high-quality wood selection.

The other design details also highlight the unique character of this Hummingbird. The classic parallelogram mother-of-pearl fretboard inlays, the gold-plated Grover tuners, and the intricate body inlays give the guitar an elegant appearance. The short scale length of 629 mm, combined with the comfortable neck, ensures a pleasant playing experience.

An L.R. Baggs pickup system is installed for amplified performance. This makes the guitar suitable not only for purely acoustic use, but also allows it to be easily amplified on stage or in the studio.

Condition

The guitar is in very good, exceptionally well-maintained condition. Only a few minor signs of wear, in the form of light strumming marks, are visible. Otherwise, the instrument looks almost brand-new. Technically, the guitar is also in flawless condition and offers excellent playability.

Setup & Playability

We carefully set up every guitar. We adjust the neck radius and string action to ensure that the guitar plays cleanly, comfortably, and without buzzing across the entire fretboard.

The string action is 2.6 mm on the low E string and 2.1 mm on the high e string, measured at the 12th fret.
