The Atkin Dust Bowl 000-14 is a beautiful acoustic guitar, handcrafted in England, inspired by the simple American mahogany guitars of the 1930s. With the Dust Bowl Series, British guitar maker Alister Atkin captures the unique character of these historic instruments and combines it with traditional craftsmanship, high-quality materials, and exceptional tonal qualities. The result is a guitar that conveys the charm of a vintage instrument both visually and sonically.
The history of Atkin Guitars began in the mid-1990s, when Alister Atkin started building his own acoustic guitars in England. His instruments are often modeled after classic pre-war American steel-string guitars. Atkin places great emphasis on traditional construction methods, a careful selection of tonewoods, and a response that is as natural and lively as possible. The manufacturer became particularly well-known for its high-quality, vintage-inspired guitars, which are now prized by numerous professional musicians and discerning guitarists.
The Dust Bowl Series holds a special place within the Atkin lineup. It is modeled after the simple acoustic guitars—mostly made of mahogany—that were widespread in the U.S. during the economically difficult years of the Great Depression. Many of these instruments were deliberately kept simple and were intended above all to be affordable, reliable companions for musicians. Yet it was precisely these minimalist guitars that developed a sound all their own, one that remains closely associated with traditional blues, folk, and American roots music to this day.
The Atkin Dust Bowl 000-14 offered here dates from 2024 and captures this historic aesthetic in a particularly successful way. With its compact 000 body shape and a neck-to-body transition at the 14th fret, it combines comfortable dimensions with remarkable richness of tone. The 000 body style offers a nice middle ground between smaller parlor guitars and larger dreadnoughts and is ideal for a variety of playing styles.
A distinctive feature of this Atkin is its body construction, made entirely of African mahogany. The top, back, and sides are all made of solid mahogany. This classic all-mahogany construction has a sound character all its own, which differs significantly from the usual combinations of a spruce top and a rosewood or mahogany body.
Mahogany used for the top produces a particularly direct and warm response with pronounced mids and a wonderfully woody tone. The highs sound pleasantly rounded and never intrusive, while the bass range remains dry and controlled. It is precisely these characteristics that make all-solid mahogany guitars particularly appealing for blues, fingerstyle, and traditional American music.
In terms of tone, this Dust Bowl 000-14 is truly impressive. Despite its compact body shape, it produces an astonishingly large and full sound. It has a powerful foundation, warm and prominent mids, and wonderfully rounded highs. The sound comes across as very natural, open, and immediate. Particularly nice is the quick response, which means that even a light touch produces a full and clearly defined tone.
When it comes to fingerpicking, the guitar impresses with excellent string separation and a very direct playing feel. Individual notes can be brought out beautifully and possess a lovely warmth and definition. The Atkin truly reveals its special character, especially when playing traditional blues and fingerstyle. At the same time, it offers enough dynamics and volume to impress even during more vigorous strumming.
The 632 mm scale length contributes to a comfortable playing experience. Combined with a 45 mm nut width, the guitar offers a wonderful balance between comfortable playability and ample space for more demanding fingerstyle techniques. The compact body shape sits comfortably against the body, making the Dust Bowl an instrument you’ll enjoy playing for extended periods of time.
A particular visual highlight is the meticulously aged nitrocellulose finish. For this series, Atkin uses a special aged finish that gives the impression of an instrument that has aged naturally over many decades. The dark mahogany appearance, the subtle, artificially created finish checking, and the deliberately understated features give the guitar a beautiful, authentic vintage look.
Yet the aging effect is by no means exaggerated. Rather, the Dust Bowl is reminiscent of a well-preserved pre-war American acoustic guitar that has been played for many decades. It is precisely the combination of dark mahogany, aged nitrocellulose lacquer, and simple features that gives this model its special appeal.
Atkin also stays true to the traditional design when it comes to the other materials. The fingerboard and bridge are made of East Indian rosewood and complement the dark mahogany finish perfectly. The ebony nut and the compensated bone bridge insert round out the high-quality features. The Gotoh Antique Open Gear tuners, with their classic appearance, underscore the instrument’s historical character while ensuring reliable tuning.
The Atkin Dust Bowl 000-14 is thus far more than just a visual homage to vintage mahogany guitars. It combines the simple aesthetics of historic instruments with the precision and build quality of a modern, handcrafted steel-string guitar. Guitarists who prefer a warm, dry, and characterful tone will find this to be a particularly interesting instrument.
Overall, the guitar is in very good condition. In addition to the factory-aged finish, a few authentic signs of wear have developed over time, which blend harmoniously with the vintage look. Overall, the guitar looks outstanding and has been very well cared for. The frets are in like-new condition.
We carefully set up every guitar. We adjust the neck radius and string action to ensure that the guitar plays cleanly, comfortably, and without buzzing across the entire fretboard.
The string action is 2.25 mm on the low E string and 1.8 mm on the high e string, measured at the 12th fret.
