This special custom model was crafted exclusively for the American retailer My Favorite Guitars and combines the traditional Golden Era construction with high-quality tonewoods, period-authentic features, and a beautiful vintage look.

The D-18 Golden Era is one of the most interesting interpretations of the legendary pre-war Martin D-18. While the classic D-18 is known for its direct, woody, and powerful mahogany tone, the Golden Era draws even more heavily on the historical design features of the 1930s. The result is a dreadnought with impressive resonance, exceptional dynamics, and a particularly lively response.

At the heart of this Martin is the solid Adirondack spruce top. This high-quality tonewood was used in many of the most sought-after pre-war Martin guitars and is prized for its enormous dynamic range, high durability, and powerful sound projection. Especially when played with a strong touch, Adirondack spruce produces impressive projection without losing any clarity or definition.

Combined with solid mahogany for the back and sides, this creates the characteristic sound of a high-quality D-18. The bass tones are dry, precise, and powerful, while the midrange possesses a distinct woody warmth. The trebles are clear, brilliant, and exceptionally nuanced. Particularly impressive is the guitar’s immediate response to even the subtlest nuances of playing.

A key feature is the traditional Golden Era bracing. The scalloped X-bracing, crafted from Adirondack spruce, is offset toward the front and is modeled after the historic construction methods of the 1930s. This design allows the top to vibrate with exceptional freedom, resulting in an open resonance, rich tone, and remarkably quick response.

This Martin really shows its strengths when playing bluegrass. Powerfully strummed chords have tremendous presence, while individual flatpicking lines stand out clearly and precisely. At the same time, the guitar impresses with its sensitive response and excellent string separation when fingerpicking. It thus combines the powerful presence of a traditional dreadnought with a remarkably versatile tonal character.

The instrument’s historic features also underscore its exceptional quality. The mahogany neck features the traditional Modified-V profile and offers an authentic playing feel reminiscent of high-quality pre-war Martin guitars. The ebony fingerboard and the classic ebony belly bridge round out the high-quality construction.

Of particular interest are the nut and the long bridge insert made of fossilized mammoth ivory. These high-quality materials are among the Golden Era’s distinctive features and underscore its consistent commitment to the design of historic Martin instruments. The precise Waverly tuners with classic butterbean wings round out the traditional features.

Visually, this custom model is a delight with its beautiful Ambertone 1933 finish. The warm color gradient is reminiscent of the historic sunburst finishes of the 1930s and gives the guitar an elegant, authentic vintage look. Combined with the classic D-18 specifications, the result is a remarkably harmonious overall look.

The Martin D-18GE Golden Era Ambertone 1933 Custom thus combines the characteristic qualities of a high-quality pre-war dreadnought with the precision of modern Martin craftsmanship. A special guitar for lovers of traditional Martin instruments, discerning flatpickers, and guitarists seeking a powerful, open, and distinctive acoustic tone.

Condition

The guitar is in very good, well-maintained condition. The pickguard shows typical strumming marks, which are evidence of the instrument’s previous use. In addition, there are a few minor signs of wear consistent with its age.

The frets are in nearly mint condition and show hardly any wear. Technically, the Martin is in perfect condition and impresses with its outstanding sound projection and excellent playability.

Overall, this is a very beautiful, well-maintained example of this special custom model.

The original Martin Geib case is included with the purchase.

Setup & Playability

We carefully set up every guitar. We adjust the neck radius and string action to ensure that the guitar plays cleanly, comfortably, and without buzzing across the entire fretboard.

The traditional Modified-V neck profile offers a distinctive playing feel and is particularly comfortable to hold when using classic flatpicking and bluegrass techniques. The combination of the long scale length of 645 mm and the carefully adjusted string action enables precise response and excellent control over the instrument.

The string action is 2.5 mm on the low E string and 1.9 mm on the high e string, measured at the 12th fret. The playability is excellent.

Specifications

Model: Martin D-18GE Golden Era Ambertone 1933 Custom
Origin: USA
Special model: Custom version for My Favorite Guitars
Series: Golden Era
Body shape: Dreadnought, 14-fret
Top: Solid Adirondack spruce
Back and sides: Solid mahogany
Neck: Mahogany
Neck profile: Modified V
Fingerboard: Ebony
Bridge: Ebony, 1930s-style belly
Scale length: 645 mm
Nut width: 44.5 mm
Bracing: Forward-shifted scalloped X-bracing, Adirondack
Nut and bridge inlay: Fossilized mammoth ivory
Tuners: Waverly Nickel, Butterbean
Finish: Ambertone 1933, High Gloss
Case: Original Martin Geib Case

Link to Martin Guitars: Martin Guitars

More Martin guitars from our shop: Martin

Exceptional Martin D-18GE Golden Era Ambertone 1933 Custom, crafted exclusively for My Favorite Guitars.
