Description

This Washburn “New Model” with the serial number 56065 was built in 1894 – one of the early guitars from the heyday of the legendary Lyon & Healy workshop in Chicago. The serial number, the George Washburn branding and the typical “New Model” stamp clearly identify this instrument as a model from the 1890s. The dating is based on the recognized reference works by Hubert Pleijsier and George Gruhn, which systematically document the Washburn serial numbers of this period.

The guitar is not only a piece of music history, but also a true experience in terms of sound. With a solid spruce top, Brazilian rosewood back and sides, a cedar neck and ebony fingerboard, it has a high-quality and well-balanced sound. Despite its age, the guitar is in very good condition. There are some professionally repaired cracks on the back, as well as a crack in the middle of the top below the bridge – all repairs were carried out professionally and structurally flawlessly.

The guitar is light, resonant and has a remarkably direct response. The lateral position is flat, the playability excellent. The neck is straight, the truss rod is not required – this guitar plays as if it had been built for the stage. The original case from the period has also been preserved and is included in the scope of delivery – a real rarity.

A highlight for every collector and player alike.
