A real highlight for aficionados: a Martin D-28 from 1969 – built in the coveted pre-70s era, when Martin guitars with Brazilian rosewood cemented their legendary reputation. This guitar combines a Sitka spruce top with Brazilian rosewood back and sides – a first-class combination for collectors and players in terms of both sound and appearance.
The history of this D-28 is great: for many years it was Wolfgang Verocai’s permanent stage instrument. It can be heard live in several YouTube videos – powerful, direct, present. Previously, the guitar was in the studio of Austrian-American composer Thomas Schobel in New York, who worked on international film productions – including “Midway”, “10,000 BC” and “Independence Day: Resurgence”.
In terms of sound, this D-28 delivers what you would expect from a model from this period: it sounds mature, open and full of character. The tone is immediate, carries well and always remains balanced – with rich bass, present mids and clear highs. A guitar that inspires musically and is just as convincing in the studio as it is in the living room.
The top shows typical traces of use – pick marks and small dents – which give it an authentic vintage aesthetic. There are some professionally repaired cracks on the back and sides, which are stable and unobtrusive. The string action is pleasantly flat, with sufficient bridge inlay for adjustments. Precise Schaller tuners are fitted, the original Grover Rotomatics are included. Bridge pins and strap pin are made of fossil mammoth ivory.
Wolfgang Verocai had an LR Baggs pickup installed for his live performances. This has since been uninstalled, but is included with the guitar.
The original Martin hardshell case and a brochure from the period are also included. The required CITES document for the Brazilian rosewood is of course included.
