Description

For sale is a Gibson Dove from the transitional period between the 1960s and 1970s – and thus from one of the best construction phases in Gibson’s history, even before the beginning of the Norlin era (from mid-1970).

This Dove probably dates from late 1969 or early 1970. The serial number and the “Made in USA” stamp officially indicate early 1970 – but crucial details point to a 1969 model: The neck has no volute (thickening on the neck at the transition to the head), which did not become standard until 1970. The one-piece X-bracing used also corresponds to the lighter, more resonant construction of the 60s and ensures an open-sounding, lively tone – a far cry from the heavier sound of the later Norlin years.

In terms of sound, the Dove offers exactly what it is famous for: clear trebles, punchy mids and a defined bass – all embedded in the great dynamics of a square-shoulder dreadnought. The solid spruce top in combination with maple sides and back produces a brilliant, direct sound character that is ideal for strumming and songwriting.

The overall condition of the guitar is very good. There are numerous play marks, small scratches and dings & dongs, but no cracks, breaks or repairs. The guitar is completely original, including the bridge, pickguard and machine heads. The truss rod also works perfectly. The action is flat and the guitar plays smooth as butter.

An inconspicuous K and K pure Mini Western pickup was installed to reproduce the great sound with amplification.

The Dove is supplied in a sturdy but not original hardshell case.
