The Martin D-35S 12 Fret 1974 is one of the particularly rare variants of the classic D-35 and occupies a special position within Martin’s history. As a 12-fret dreadnought, its construction is based on the early dreadnought models of the 1930s, in which the neck merges into the body at the 12th fret. This design shifts the bridge position further into the middle of the top and ensures a particularly full, deep and sustaining sound.
In combination with the characteristic three-piece back in Style 35 design made of East Indian rosewood, the typical D-35S sound is created: rich, round basses, clear mids and pleasantly open trebles. A very mature, well-balanced vintage tone with plenty of foundation and projection develops, especially with recorded instruments from this era. This Martin D-35S 12 Fret delivers exactly this open, large-format sound that players and collectors appreciate in 70s Martins.
The condition of this over 50 year old Martin D-35S is exceptionally good. Everything is original, including the original Martin case with keys and covers. There is the typical crack below the high E string to the left of the pickguard. However, this is only superficial, does not go through the wood and has been professionally filled and stabilized. Structurally, the guitar is in perfect condition.
The bridge inlay has been replaced by a bridge inlay made of fossil mammoth ivory, the original bridge inlay is included. The bridge pins have also been replaced with high-quality pins made of koa wood, the original pins are also present. The string action is comfortably set at 2.6 mm on the low E-string and 2.1 mm on the high E-string at the 12th fret. In combination with the wide nut width of 47.6 mm, this results in a very confident, relaxed playing feel.
A rare opportunity to acquire an original 1974 Martin D-35S 12 Fret in this condition.
