C.F. Martin & Co. has been one of the most influential names in acoustic guitar making since the 19th century. The early dreadnought models from the 1930s in particular are still considered milestones in guitar history today. The Martin D-18S is also part of this tradition, a model that deliberately follows the design of the early 12-fret dreadnoughts – long before the 14-fret transition that is common today became established.
The Martin D-18S occupies a special position within the Martin history. As a 12-fret dreadnought with a wide neck and classic construction, it has an independent character that is clearly different from the later D-18 variants. Production numbers were comparatively low, which is why original D-18S models from this period are rarely found on the market today and are highly prized by players and collectors alike. In 1980, just nine models were produced.
The Martin D-18S offered here dates from 1980 and is in very good condition for its age, with age-appropriate traces of use that emphasize its authentic vintage character. Technically, the instrument is flawless. The string action is very well adjusted and is 2.2 mm on the low E string and 1.5 mm on the high E string at the 12th fret, which makes it extremely pleasant and comfortable to play.
It should be mentioned that the wings of the machine heads on the D and G strings are clearly bent. This is hardly noticeable visually, but it is noticeable when tuning. Nevertheless, the machine heads work reliably, run cleanly and keep the tuning stable.
The sound of this Martin D-18S is convincing across the board. The 12-fret body ensures a particularly open and powerful response with pronounced basses, clear mids and a warm, dry base note. It is precisely these characteristics that make well-recorded mahogany martins from this era so sought-after. The tone is direct, sustaining and present without being intrusive – ideal for strumming, flatpicking and expressive fingerstyle playing.
