The Lowden G-23 from the Japanese production phase of the early 1980s is one of the most exciting chapters in Lowden’s history. During this period, George Lowden had his designs manufactured under license in a small, specialized workshop in Japan. The instruments produced there now enjoy an excellent reputation – they are rare, have an impressive sound and are highly sought after by connoisseurs.
The Lowden G-23 is a large, powerful steelstring model with a body size between dreadnought and jumbo. It is aimed at players who are looking for an open, powerful sound with plenty of foundation. The solid cedar top responds quickly and vividly, while the back and sides made of solid ovangkol contribute warmth, depth and present mids. The combination provides a characteristic, full Lowden tone with clear trebles and a balanced, musical response.
Typical features of this Japanese Lowden era are the five-piece neck, the characteristic Lowden bracing (“Dolphin Bracing”) and the pinless bridge with split bridge inlay. The latter ensures even vibration transmission, excellent intonation and a particularly direct response – qualities that have always characterized Lowden guitars.
The condition of the Lowden G-23 is very good. The string action is set flat and offers an effortless, pleasant playing feel over the entire fingerboard. The frets are also in very good condition, with only minor signs of wear. Technically, the instrument is ready for immediate use. In terms of sound, the G-23 impresses with plenty of volume, a powerful bass range, clear trebles and present mids, which assert themselves excellently in both ensemble and solo playing.
