The Gibson SJ-200 is one of the most legendary acoustic guitars ever and is still considered the “King of the Flat-Tops” today. Introduced by Gibson at the end of the 1930s, the Super Jumbo with its imposing body, maple back and elaborately designed appearance had a lasting impact on the sound and appearance of modern acoustic guitars. Hardly any other model stands for size, presence and iconic appearance as much as the Gibson SJ-200.
The instrument on offer here dates back to 1999 and has been played in for over two decades. This is exactly what you can hear and feel. The top has several fine cracks in the nitro lacquer – a typical feature of older Gibson guitars that is now artificially reproduced in the Murphy Lab. On this Gibson SJ-200, however, these lacquer cracks are completely natural. They not only give the guitar an authentic vintage look, but also support the free vibration of the top.
The overall condition of the Gibson SJ-200 is very good. Apart from the aforementioned cracks in the lacquer, the guitar only shows normal, age-appropriate signs of use. The frets are also in very good condition and still offer plenty of substance. Overall, this instrument presents itself as an excellently maintained, fully playable Super Jumbo with a lot of history and character.
In terms of sound, the Gibson SJ-200 stands for exactly what this model is famous for: a big, supporting bass foundation, clear trebles and impressive projection. It really comes into its own when strumming, but is equally convincing as an accompaniment and rhythm instrument. A well-rehearsed Gibson SJ-200 like this one delivers exactly the open, mature tone that you would expect from a Gibson that has grown over the years.
