The 1981 Martin D-37 K2 is an exceptional vintage guitar from a particularly interesting era in the history of American guitar making. With its body constructed entirely of Hawaiian koa, it is one of the rarest Martin models from the early 1980s. The combination of fine tonewoods, traditional dreadnought construction, and an impressive natural wood grain makes this instrument a special Martin for guitarists and collectors alike.
The history of C. F. Martin & Co. dates back to 1833. As early as the first decades of the 20th century, this long-established manufacturer was using Hawaiian koa for various guitar models. Instruments made from this exceptional wood were particularly common in the 1920s and 1930s, before koa largely disappeared from Martin’s regular lineup for many decades.
It wasn’t until around 1980 that Martin revived this tradition and introduced two special dreadnought models: the D-37 K and the D-37 K2. While the D-37 K combined a spruce top with a Hawaiian koa back and sides, the D-37 K2 also featured a solid koa top. In doing so, Martin drew inspiration from the historic all-koa guitars of the pre-war era and applied this unique wood combination to the large Dreadnought body style.
The upscale Style 37 series drew inspiration from the classic Style 28 models in terms of its features, combining traditional Martin elements with the exceptional appearance of Hawaiian koa. To craft these instruments, Martin drew on high-quality koa stock, some of which had been in storage for decades.
What makes the Martin D-37 K2 offered here so special is its all-koa construction. The solid top, back, and sides are all made of Hawaiian koa. This rare tonewood originates from the Hawaiian Islands and has been prized for generations for its exceptional grain, warm hues, and distinctive tonal qualities.
The special beauty of this wood is particularly evident in our 1981 model. The expressive grain, with its lively textures and warm, golden-brown hues, gives the guitar an impressive visual depth. Depending on how the light falls, the appearance of the wood grain changes, underscoring the unique character of this instrument.
In terms of tone, Hawaiian koa has a character all its own. It combines a clear, direct response with a prominent midrange, warm bass, and finely defined highs. Compared to classic Martin dreadnoughts with spruce tops, an all-koa guitar often produces a slightly drier, woodier, and particularly focused tone.
The large dreadnought body shape gives the D-37 K2 both impressive richness of tone and acoustic presence. The bass notes have a pleasant depth, while the mids remain clear and assertive. The treble sounds balanced and harmonious without ever becoming intrusive. Particularly beautiful is the natural warmth with which individual notes and chords are reproduced.
The combination of a solid koa top and a koa body produces a sound with a distinct character that is clearly different from that of a classic Martin D-28 or D-18. This unique design is particularly appealing to guitarists seeking a distinctive, warm, and woody acoustic tone.
The traditional construction also contributes to the instrument’s character. The D-37 K2 features a classic 14-fret dreadnought body with a scale length of 645 mm. The mahogany neck, with its comfortable C-profile, offers a familiar playing feel, while the high-quality craftsmanship and classic Martin features underscore the quality standards of this series.
The historical significance of this model is also evident in the fact that a Martin D-37 K2 from 1980, the year it was introduced, is documented in the Martin Museum’s collection. The series represents the rediscovery of a special tonewood in Martin’s history and is now considered one of the most interesting models from that era.
This 1981 Martin D-37 K2 thus combines the American manufacturer’s rich history with an exceptional selection of woods and a distinctive tonal character. A rare vintage Martin that impresses with both its striking appearance and its unique construction.
