Product Description

The Gibson L-48 is one of Gibson’s classic acoustic archtop guitars and has a long history. As early as the first half of the 20th century, Gibson played a pivotal role in the development and popularization of the American archtop guitar. While more elaborate models such as the L-5 or, later, the Super 400 appealed primarily to professional musicians, the L-48 was one of the manufacturer’s more simply equipped and affordable instruments. It was precisely for this reason that it found its way into the hands of numerous musicians and today stands as a prime example of the classic postwar Gibson archtops.

The Gibson L-48 offered here dates from 1956 and thus comes from a particularly interesting period in Gibson’s history. At that time, the instruments were still being manufactured at the historic Gibson factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan. This guitar’s factory order number begins with the letter “V,” confirming that it was built in 1956. As a result, this instrument now looks back on some 70 years of history.

A distinctive feature of the L-48 is its archtop body shape, approximately 16 inches wide, with a domed top, F-holes, a floating bridge, and a trapezoidal tailpiece. In contrast to the large and, in some cases, exceptionally lavishly equipped Gibson archtops, the L-48 was deliberately kept relatively simple. It is precisely this minimalist design that holds its own unique charm today and allows the instrument’s classic construction and naturally aged vintage character to shine through beautifully.

The wood combination of this 1956 L-48 consists of mahogany for the top and sides and maple for the back. Sonically, the guitar has a wonderfully dry, direct, and woody vintage tone. It responds quickly and delivers a crisp, clearly defined attack, just as you would expect from a vintage archtop acoustic guitar. Unlike a classic flat-top guitar, the focus here is less on a long, overtone-rich sustain. Instead, the L-48 impresses with its directness, definition, and a characteristic, percussive attack.

This tonal character has a special appeal, especially for jazz, blues, and traditional rhythm playing. Chords remain clearly defined, and the guitar responds immediately to different picking intensities. After about 70 years, this instrument also possesses a wonderfully well-played-in and mature character that pairs perfectly with an old Gibson acoustic archtop.

Visually, too, this Gibson tells its story. The classic sunburst finish has aged beautifully over the decades and shows the expected paint checking as well as a few dings, dongs, and other signs of play and wear. This authentic patina has developed naturally over many decades and gives the guitar a gorgeous vintage look.

The guitar is in very good condition for its age. Despite the signs of wear and use typical of its age, there are no cracks or breaks, and the instrument is structurally sound. The frets are in like-new condition and have likely been replaced once before. It plays very well.

Otherwise, the guitar is in its original condition. Only the original pickguard is missing. The guitar comes with a non-original Guild hardshell case.

We carefully set up every guitar. We adjust the neck radius and string action to ensure that the guitar plays cleanly, comfortably, and without buzzing across the entire fretboard.

The string action is an excellent 2.2 mm on the low E string and 1.7 mm on the high e string, measured at the 12th fret.
