Martin HD-28 K2

The Martin HD-28 K2 is a limited-edition special model of the legendary HD-28 and stands out primarily for its exceptional choice of woods. Instead of the classic combination of a spruce top and rosewood back and sides, the entire body is made of Hawaiian koa. As a result, the guitar not only features a beautiful and distinctive grain, but also a sound character all its own.

In terms of tone, koa combines the warmth and directness of mahogany with added brilliance and a pronounced spectrum of overtones. The HD-28 K2 has a warm, balanced tone, with prominent mids, clear highs, and excellent definition of individual notes. At the same time, the classic dreadnought body shape delivers the volume, dynamics, and projection you’d expect from a large Martin.

Another interesting characteristic of koa is how its tone evolves over time. Instruments that have been played very little, in particular, can continue to open up as they are played more, gaining warmth, depth, and complexity. With this virtually unplayed instrument, this process is likely still largely ahead of it.

Visually, too, the Martin HD-28 K2 is something special. The expressive and unique grain of the Hawaiian koa defines the appearance of the entire guitar. Combined with the classic herringbone inlay and traditional Style 28 features, the result is an elegant blend of familiar Martin aesthetics and exceptional wood selection.

The guitar offered here was built in 2017 and has been in a collector’s possession since it was purchased new. It has hardly ever been played and is in like-new condition. Even the factory-applied protective film was still on the pickguard until our initial inspection, and we were the first to remove it. The frets are also in like-new condition.

We carefully set up every guitar. We adjust the neck radius and string action to ensure that the guitar plays cleanly, comfortably, and without buzzing across the entire fretboard.
